Cross-country skiing Olympic champion Katharina Hennig made it onto the podium at the World Cup in Finland.

The 26-year-old only had to admit defeat to the Swedish winner Ebba Andersson and her compatriot Frida Karlsson in snowy Ruka. Hennig’s advantage in fourth place after ten kilometers in the classic technique was only two tenths of a second. Almost exactly a year ago, the athlete from WSC Erzgebirge Oberwiesenthal also took third place in the same place.

“I’m just so happy that it worked out like this again today,” said Hennig, who was still infected with the corona virus in October. She was accordingly surprised that things went so well on the first World Cup weekend of the season. “After my small Corona failure in the fall, I actually said that I had to adjust my demands a little in the first races,” said Hennig. She recovered well with her family. “It gives me a lot of strength,” she said.

At the finish, her teammates cheered Hennig euphorically. “I’m very grateful for the fact that the girls celebrated me at the finish line,” said Hennig. As the second best German, Victoria Carl ended up in 13th place. Carl and Hennig surprisingly won the gold medal in the team sprint at the Olympic Winter Games in China in February. As in the sprint on the previous day, the Norwegian Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo won the men’s race. Janosch Brugger finished eighth as the best German.
