Nordic skiing: Combined Riiber wins – Schmid ahead in the overall World Cup

After first and second place, Julian Schmid is not good enough for the podium this time. The Nordic combined athlete from Oberstdorf can still be happy.

Exceptional athlete Jarl Magnus Riiber also won the mass start competition of the Nordic Combined. The Norwegian prevailed in the rarely held format in Ruka, Finland, covered in deep snow, ahead of Matteo Baud from France and Ryota Yamamoto from Japan.

Julian Schmid took fifth place as the best German. The 23-year-old from Oberstdorf defended his yellow jersey for the leader in the overall World Cup just ahead of Riiber.

“The conditions were a bit special today, but my jump was still very good,” said Schmid, who was 21st in the cross-country race. He took fifth place with a jump of 142.5 meters. In Manuel Faißt in sixth place and Eric Frenzel in ninth place, two other athletes from national coach Hermann Weinbuch’s team made it into the top ten athletes.

First run, then jump

Schmid won the season opener on Friday and finished second on Saturday. Unlike in most other World Cup competitions in Nordic combined, the athletes first contested a ten-kilometer cross-country race on Sunday. The decision was then made during the subsequent ski jumping. Normally you jump first and then run.

Riiber had already broken a special mark on Saturday: The 25-year-old celebrated the 50th individual World Cup victory of his career. No other combined athlete had managed so many before. The next day he let the next success follow. “I had a few problems at the beginning. But I fought my way through it,” said Riiber, who was only 14th on Friday. “It was nice that I managed to win two in a row.”
