FIFA Allows Certain Iran Protest Support Marks

“FIFA allows messages promoting human rights and FIFA’s position is that ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ or the name or likeness of Mahsa Amini are allowed in stadiums,” it said in a reply to a message via the FIFA complaints platform, which AFP was able to see on Tuesday.

According to the FIFA rules, however, content with political, insulting or discriminatory messages is prohibited. This also applies to unofficial country flags that could be seen as political messages.

Since the death of the Kurdish woman Amini on September 16, Iran has been the scene of mass protests under the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom”. Amini was arrested by the vice squad for allegedly wearing her headscarf improperly and died three days later.

The protest movement also had an impact in neighboring Qatar. There were several incidents in the grandstands of the football World Cup stadiums. On Friday, security forces confiscated a man’s Iranian flag at a stadium, which read “Woman, Life, Freedom.”

“FIFA is aware of several incidents that took place during the first week of the tournament at matches played by Iran. FIFA has taken steps to investigate these incidents,” the world governing body said. For Iran’s upcoming games at the World Cup, “additional measures” should be taken to “create a safe and secure environment for all fans present”.

On Tuesday evening, the Iran national team met the selection of the USA. Unlike their opening game against England, the players sang along with the national anthem. At their first World Cup game, they were silent while the Iranian anthem was played in the stadium as a sign of solidarity with government critics in their home country. However, before their second game against Wales, the players were back in tune with the anthem.
