Wiener Austria has separated from coach Manfred Schmid with immediate effect. The Bundesliga club announced this on Monday. “Differences of opinion on essential sporting issues” had been identified, the statement said. The search for a successor to the 51-year-old will start “immediately”. The professional kickers of the “Violets” are currently on vacation.
Schmid surprisingly took third place with Austria in the previous season, but this season there has been a downward slide. The violets wintered in the Bundesliga only as seventh in the table, in the round of 16 they were eliminated by the regional league team Wiener Sport-Club and in the group stage of the conference league they finished last with two points from six games.
In the broadcast, Austria wrote that the autumn season had been “analyzed in detail together. The detailed analysis of the autumn season shows a need for action in some areas in order to achieve our sporting goals”.
differences noted
Differences finally became apparent in the meeting on Monday. “Against this background, talks with Manfred Schmid about a common sporting future and a contract extension unfortunately failed today, Monday. Both parties then mutually agreed to go their separate ways in the future,” the club reported. Schmid was “released from his duties as coach of the fighting team as of today, in agreement with the supervisory board of FK Austria Wien AG”.
Schmid himself also had his say in the broadcast. “Austria’s leadership has decided that they want to see a certain type of football in the future. That’s absolutely fine, but I’m not the right coach for that because I don’t fully believe in it. But I’m also not a coach with an expiry date want to be, it is best for all parties to terminate the contract immediately,” said Schmid. He thanked “my players, the many fans, all the employees and those responsible at Wiener Austria”. During his one-and-a-half-year tenure, “successes were celebrated that I hardly thought possible.”
Schmid’s contract would have run until the end of the season and would have been automatically extended if he had taken part in the European Cup. Therefore, sports director Manuel Ortlechner saw no reason to extend the contract prematurely, while Schmid himself often indicated in the autumn that he would like to sign a new working paper relatively quickly. There have been disagreements for months between the outgoing coach on the one hand and Ortlechner and Austria investor Jürgen Werner on the other.
