This is how Max Franz feels after his serious fall

But there is still a “long way to go” until then, said the 33-year-old on Wednesday at a press conference in the UKH Graz, from which he will be released to home care on Thursday. The medical team taking care of him is also cautiously optimistic that Franz will be fully recovered after his serious training accident.

Open fracture on the lower leg

On November 13, Franz fell badly during downhill training in Copper Mountain (Colorado) and sustained an open fracture on his left lower leg including a severed nerve, a complicated fracture on his right ankle and a cut on his right arm.

After initial treatment of the injuries by the doctor from the US ski team, Randy Viola, Franz was taken to UKH Graz on November 18, where a team of doctors led by Jürgen Mandl took over further treatment.

“A good pretzel”

Franz, who attended the press conference in a wheelchair, thanked everyone on Wednesday who made sure “that I can sit there now”. In any case, the three weeks since his “gscheitn’ Brezn” had been “very exciting”. According to the circumstances, he feels “quite well” and is now looking forward to his own bed and to friends and family at home.

After that, therapy in the Tobelbad rehabilitation clinic and a presumably long way back awaits. The head of the UKH, Christian Kammerlander, expects that Franz’s rehabilitation will take around a year. Kammerlander described the anatomical reconstruction of the right ankle by Primarius Michael Plecko as “very successful”.
