On Friday, the summit participants unanimously voted to consider an application from the Asian governing body that would allow athletes from the two countries to take part in its competitions.
The condition is that these athletes respect the Olympic Charter and the existing sanctions because of the Ukraine war, said the International Olympic Committee. In principle, the summit confirmed that the punitive measures against Russia and Belarus should remain in place for the time being. Facilitations for the athletes are now to be discussed in further talks at the IOC level with world associations, athletes’ representatives and national Olympic committees. The IOC executive also wants to put the current measures to the test.
According to the IOC, Asia’s umbrella organization OCA justified its proposal with the fact that the reasons for the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes no longer exist in this region of the world. Participation under a neutral flag and without playing the anthems of the two countries is therefore possible. That could also include qualifying competitions for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.
IOC President Thomas Bach has recently repeatedly said that sport should not be politicized and Russian athletes should not be punished for their country’s war of aggression. The head of the Russian Olympic Committee, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, was invited to the summit.
