World Cup in Hochfilzen: German biathletes with relay in fourth place

The German biathletes pass the relay podium in Hochfilzen. One of the favored teams wins.

At the end of the World Cup in Hochfilzen, Austria, the German biathletes missed the next podium finish with the relay.

Anna Weidel, Franziska Preuss, Vanessa Voigt and Denise Herrmann-Wick finished fourth behind France, Sweden and Italy after finishing second at the season opener in Kontiolahti last week. The Germans used a total of five spare rounds and after 4×6 kilometers were 33.7 seconds behind the leaders.

With two clean shooting bouts, Weidel delivered exactly what the coaches expect of her. She handed over to Preuss in fourth place, 21.7 seconds behind the leading Swedes. “I was extremely nervous, but shooting went well,” said Weidel. The 28-year-old Preuss, who was slowed down in preparation and at the opening World Cup last week due to health problems, cleared all targets without a spare.

But because the competition remained flawless and Preuss is not yet able to make up ground on the track, Voigt started her race in fourth (+31.2 seconds). “I notice that I’m not that strong yet. I’m only in the red zone in the race and then you stand at the shooting range and wobble,” said Preuss, who therefore deliberately ran tactically on the track.

Voigt, who had to reload once, put her team in third place with a good final lap (+11.9 seconds). But Herrmann-Wick needed two extra cartridges both in prone and standing position and fell back decisively.
