World Cup Final in Qatar: Argentina world champion by defeating France on penalties

In the shootout, Lionel Messi, Paulo Dybala, Leandro Paredes and Gonzalo Montiel scored for Argentina, while Kylian Mbappé and Randal Kolo Muani scored for France.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez blocked Kingsley Coman’s shot, while Aurelien Tchouameni deflected his shot.

Argentina won the title as in 1978 and 1986 against a French team that was nullified in most of the match due to the game and the intensity of the team led by Lionel Scaloni.

After winning the Copa América as a visitor against Brazil in 2021 and the Finalíssima against Italy in 2022, the team generated enthusiasm in the Argentine people like never before in previous editions of the competition.

The development of the final in Qatar with an Argentine team led us to believe that Lionel Messi would finally lift the trophy without suffering in his fifth and last World Cup, and much more so when the goals from “Pulga” and Ángel Di María arrived.

But France reacted near the end and took the match to extra time with a double from Kylian Mbappé, after 80 minutes without shots on the rival goal.

In extra time, Messi scored the double that did justice to the result for the team that had done the most in the 120 minutes, but Mbappé equalized again to take the match to penalties.

In the match played at the Lusail stadium in front of 88,000 fans with a vast majority of Argentines, Argentina surprised from the start with control of the ball and great ambition.

France found problems to set up the game and find their top star Mbappé, controlled with a staggered mark between defender Nahuel Molina and midfielder Rodrigo De Paul.

Argentina’s superiority was reflected in the approaches to the rival goal with shots from Alexis Mac Allister and Ángel Di María.

The first goal came after 23 minutes through a penalty executed by Lionel Messi to the left of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, after an offense by Ousmane Dembélé on Di María.

Argentina did not give up control after the opening of the scoring, they continued to own the ball with Messi as the leader of each advance in attack, and as a consequence found the second goal.

Mac Allister received the ball from Julián Álvarez and assisted for Di María’s goal at minute 36, with a precise definition before Lloris left.

Coach Didier Deschamps looked for a reaction, taking Dembélé and Olivier Giroud at 41 to add Randal Kolo Muani and Marcus Thuram, and stop Mbappé in the center of attack.

Argentina maintained the superiority in the second stage, but could not take advantage of the opportunities to widen the difference and in the last minutes paid for their lack of aim.

France, who had not had any shots on goal, discounted at 80 through a penalty that Mbappé converted, after a foul by Nicolás Otamendi on Muani.
