“I think it’s good if we get away from the concept of winter sports. I think we’re an extreme sport and that you can do it anywhere and anyhow.” The 49-year-old, who formed Olympic champions and overall World Cup winners, is of the opinion that ski jumping has to be open to new things in many areas – for example to new formats that, above all, have to be suitable for television.
Because the ski jumpers started their season earlier because of the football World Cup in Qatar, the athletes landed on mats instead of snow at the start of the World Cup in Poland at the beginning of November. If Stöckl has his way, this could happen more often in the future.
“We’re lucky that we have plastic ski jumps, that it’s feasible and that we don’t need snow,” said Stöckl, also with a view to climate change. “Either we keep calling ourselves winter sports and die in winter – because at some point it won’t exist anymore. Or we call ourselves extreme sports and are more open to new destinations.” So ski jumping in Africa, Australia or South America? And in completely new formats?
