Climbing the summit after a cruciate ligament tear

Austria’s footballer of the year 2022 comes from the German Bundesliga and is called Julia Hickelsberger-Füller. The Hoffenheim legionnaire, who had played into the display with strong performances at the EURO in England, sat down in the vote initiated by the Austria Press Agency among the red-white-red Oberhaus supervisors with 14 points ahead of Sarah Zadrazil (FC Bayern) and Eileen Campbell (Altach/Vorderland), who scored eleven points.

Defending champion Nicole Billa (Hoffenheim) took fourth place, followed by two Upper Austrians, Annabel Schasching (SK Sturm) and Laura Wienroither (WFC Arsenal). Walter Weiss, the sporting director of the SPG Kleinmünchen/Blau-Weiss Linz, gave the 20-year-old Schasching from the Innviertel his first vote, “because she has made a great development and is already a leader at her young age”. For Mark Dobrounig from Vienna, Wienroither from Frankenburg was the first choice: “She can be used universally and has performed well and solidly over a long period of time,” he explained.

Nevertheless, there was no way around the fast winger Hickelsberger-Füller. And that despite the fact that the 23-year-old from St. Pölten had to take a break of no less than 17 months due to a cruciate ligament rupture and subsequent injuries and only made her competitive comeback in January. “Giving up was never an option for me, even if it challenged me mentally. This award makes me very proud,” said the ÖFB team player, who has scored seven goals in 26 international matches.

In the summer, Hickelsberger-Füller moved from Austria’s series champion SKN St. Pölten to TSG Hoffenheim, where she signed a contract until 2024 and played alongside her ÖFB colleagues Billa and Katharina Naschenweng. The season goal of the current fifth in the table remains the Champions League, from which St. Pölten (6.45 p.m., DAZN) wants to say goodbye with decency today. However, the grapes are hanging high against VfL Wolfsburg.
