The Australian Gran Prix, which was canceled at short notice last year, could not take place in 2021 due to the strict quarantine restrictions and the resulting logistical challenges, according to a press conference.
“While it is disappointing that we cannot drive in Australia this season, we are confident that we can still carry out the 23 races planned for 2021,” said Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali in a press release. Formula 1 has “a number of options” as a replacement for the Grand Prix, which was supposed to take place in Melbourne on November 21st. In “the coming weeks” a solution should be presented, it said.
During the corona pandemic, the race in Australia, which under normal circumstances always opened the season, is already the third Grand Prix that cannot be held this year. Previously, the World Cup races in Montreal, Canada, and Singapore were canceled due to corona restrictions. A second race in Spielberg was added to the calendar, and a stop in Istanbul is planned for October. This also had to be postponed due to the high corona numbers.
The planned motorcycle Grand Prix race in Australia also had to be canceled. The event was scheduled for October 22nd to 24th on Phillip Island and could not take place in 2020.
