The 23-year-old Zambian is moving from Austria’s football champions Salzburg to the English Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion. The robust midfielder will sign a four-year contract there, the Salzburg team announced on Tuesday. There is no official fee, according to English media reports Brighton is said to have paid a little more than 20 million euros for Mwepu.
Since his move in 2017, Mwepu has played a total of 119 matches (18 goals, 20 assists) for Salzburg and won four championship titles and three cup trophies. The commitment of the African duo Mwepu and Daka has literally paid off for Salzburg. Just a few days ago, Daka moved to Leicester City as a Bundesliga record transfer for a rumored 30 million euros. For comparison: the combined transfer sum corresponds to a multiple of the season budget of some league competitors.
“Enock’s path with us in recent years has been very impressive. Over the years he has developed into an absolute key player that we have always been able to rely on 100 percent,” said Christoph Freund. Salzburg’s sports director said goodbye to Mwepu, a “great person and beam man” from the team of the series champion.
