ÖSV President Roswitha Stadlober recently announced that there would be a Four Hills Tournament for female ski jumpers in 2024/25 at the earliest. Nevertheless, the New Year’s Eve tour has grown into a four-part event for the first time. A year ago, defending champion Sara Marita Kramer was still able to win two competitions in Ljubno, Slovenia, to win the “Golden Owl”, but the trophy now honors the best of two events in Villach (today and tomorrow) and Ljubno (Saturday and Sunday).
Leaving the family for the ski jumping circus on Stefanitag is unusual, according to ÖSV head coach Harald Rodlauer, “but that’s part of it now. You can see that the whole thing is growing.” The tenor in the team is similar. “It’s great that we have the New Year’s Tournament, but it’s not a Four Hills Tournament,” says Jacqueline Seifriedsberger. The Innviertlerin jumped into the points three times this season, the best chances for top places have others in the ÖSV squad. On the one hand, Kramer: The 21-year-old, who was on the podium in Wisla (2nd) and Oslo (3rd), said defending the title was her goal, “but you have to be realistic. I have no idea where I am now connect”, she alludes to an illness in December.
On the other hand Eva Pinkelnig: The 34-year-old won the second mat competition in Wisla and is only four points behind the German leader Katharina Althaus in the overall World Cup. “I get along quite well with the hill in Villach, I have a concept for it,” says the woman from Vorarlberg, who won yesterday’s qualification ahead of Germany’s Selina Freitag. Kramer, who has problems with the short take-off, finished 19th.
Too early for Iraschko pride
Meanwhile, Daniela Iraschko-Stolz has to wait a little longer. Austria’s record World Cup winner is working on a renewed comeback after severe cartilage damage in her knee. “Things are looking good with Daniela,” says Rodlauer. However, the New Year’s tour comes too early for the 39-year-old. “We planned for the end of January,” says the coach. Even a World Cup start is still realistic.
New Year’s Tour: Today: Villach (2.15 p.m.) Tomorrow: Villach (13) Saturday: Ljubno (16) Sunday: Ljubno (4.30 p.m., all live on ORF 1)
