Reform in the regional league: OÖFV with application

Gerhard Götschhofer, President of the Upper Austrian Football Association, had already tried in the summer to talk to the other state association presidents about a league reform in the third division – at that time not all state bosses were ready for a joint meeting.

Now the OÖFV is going a different way: an application was made directly to the ÖFB that the situation in the regional league should be evaluated. “It won’t help to only initiate this topic in our own house. We also need the other associations for this. That’s why we also submitted an application to the ÖFB, because: If an application has been submitted, it must also be discussed”, says Upper Austria’s association director Raphael Koch.

There are some ideas for restructuring – the most discussed: four instead of three regional leagues, Upper Austria with Salzburg instead of Styria and Carinthia and a play-off with two promoted teams. A revolution in the third division would have to be fixed before the start of the new season in order to apply to the 2023/2024 season that follows. But everything is still in the future – at least the next advance has now been officially set.
