Black Wings signed defender from Canada

The Canadian started the season in the AHL for the Iowa Wild, where Austria’s NHL hopeful Marco Rossi is currently playing. Most recently, however, the 26-year-old was used in the East Coast Hockey League (third division). The left-handed shooter contributed 17 points in 13 games.

The neo-Linzer looks back on an eventful past in the junior area. In 2013 he won the Memorial Cup with the Halifax Mooseheads alongside NHL star Nathan MacKinnon. There are also two Canadian university championships with the University of New Brunswick. In his first year as a professional, he won the Kelly Cup (East Coast Hockey League championship) with the Fort Wayne Komets in 2020. In the past two seasons, the 1.88 meter tall defender commuted between the ECHL and the AHL.

Murphy will wear number 22 in Linz and is scheduled to land in Linz on Thursday evening. When he can play for the Steinbach Black Wings for the first time depends on the formalities involved in registering a player.

  • Black Wings chief scout Rick Nasheim: “Matt is a tall defender who works hard at both ends of the ice. We’ve been dealing with him for some time and are happy that it worked out to bring him to Linz. After the failures of Gerd Kragl and Raphael Wolf he brings us stability for the current intensive phase.”
  • Matt Murphy: “I’ve asked around with some friends in the league and have only heard good things about Linz and the organization. The team is doing great and I’m really looking forward to helping them. I would describe myself as a classic two-way defender, although I see my strengths in skating and in offense.

The participants of our Christmas get-together said unanimously that the defense needs to be strengthened. Listen to the podcast:
