80th career win, 50th slalom win, third win in a row on the Semmering: Mikaela Shiffrin outshone the floodlights yesterday in the night slalom on the Zauberberg. The 27-year-old American had taken her half-time lead after the first run in the second confidently over the distance. The superstar was flanked at the award ceremony by US team colleague Paula Moltzan, who finished second ahead of Germany’s Lena Dürr.
“I don’t know what to say about the numbers, it’s incredible,” Shiffrin was happy. At the finish she was presented with a cake with an 80 by ex-ÖSV runner Michaela Dorfmeister.
“It can’t get any better,” said Shiffrin, who already scored the hat-trick at Semmering in 2016.
Austria’s women’s team was again disappointed in the third Semmering race. Katharina Truppe was the best ÖSV runner in 13th place. Franziska Gritsch (14th place) showed the best run time in the second round. “I thought to myself, let’s get it done, Franzi,” she said at the finish. Not a bad strategy…
For Katharina Liensberger it was already over after the first round. After a serious mistake in the upper part, even a strong finish was of no use to the Vorarlberger. “It’s just not easy at the moment. It’s definitely a challenge,” said Liensberger.
