Giorgio Chiellini is ashamed of the widespread racism in Italian football. The Napoli players Kalidou Koulibaly, Victor Osimhen and Andre-Frank Anguissa were insulted in the 2-1 victory of SSC Napoli at Fiorentina.
“I was ashamed to be Italian. I was ashamed to come from Tuscany,” said Chiellini, who grew up near the Tuscan capital Florence, ahead of Italy’s Nations League game against Spain on Tuesday.
Chiellini on racism problem in Italy: “Offenders must be punished more severely”
“I find it sad that people in Europe are talking about Italy as a racist country,” said the Juve star.
The 37-year-old central defender said: “We all have to do more. It throws a terrible light on Italy. I think there must be clearer laws and the perpetrators will then be severely punished.”
