Yesterday, the start of training after the winter break took place at the German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt. Michael Angerschmid, Oliver Glasner’s assistant trainer, took a lot of time for a detailed podcast discussion with the two OÖN editors Markus Prinz and Thomas Streif shortly before his return to Frankfurt.
Angerschmid (48) won the Europa League in 2022 alongside head coach Oliver Glasner from Riedau. In the Champions League, Frankfurt is in the round of 16 against Naples. The Hessians are in fourth place in the Bundesliga. You can find the podcast online at nachrichten.at/podcasts and on all major platforms such as Spotify, Deezer, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Amazon Music.
Michael Angerschmid in the OÖN podcast about:
Home leave for Christmas: The schedule is usually quite full, but I enjoy the days at home and also visit friends that I rarely see otherwise. We had a lot of games in autumn, so we didn’t often make it home to Upper Austria. Fortunately, my wife and children visit me in Frankfurt very regularly.
the year 2022 with Eintracht Frankfurt: There really wasn’t a lot of negative things in 2022. In terms of sport, it was of course crazy with the Europa League victory and the entry into the Champions League round of 16. In general, the cohesion was and is very high. It’s just fun to go to work every day. Not just because things are going so well in terms of sport, the interpersonal skills couldn’t be better either. Oliver Glasner attaches great importance to this. After the Europa League victory, the whole support team got on the plane and flew to Mallorca, most recently we went skiing together. That welds together.
Europe League: After the winning goal in the round of 16 against Betis Sevilla shortly before the end, you could tell that something was going to happen. The belief, also in the region, that we could actually win a European Cup title was palpable. This belief has increased week by week.
the duel against the great FC Barcelona: We watched the draw with the players live on TV. When FC Barcelona was drawn to us, half cheered because you don’t often play against a club like that. The other half had to take a deep breath. When we analyzed Barcelona, we noticed one or two weaknesses. After the draw in the first game at home, we knew that we could definitely win away. Before the quarter-final second leg against Barcelona, I had a very interesting encounter with a lady in downtown Frankfurt. She told me that she has now booked the trip to Seville for the final. I then said that before that we had to win a game in Barcelona and possibly the semifinals. She then said that she was absolutely convinced that we would make it into the final. She was right. I can still remember: After our goal to make it 3-0 in Barcelona, Oliver Glasner came to me and asked me if that even existed. Celebrating with the tens of thousands of Frankfurt fans was unbelievable, you never forget something like that in your whole life.
the penalty drama in the final in Seville against Glasgow Rangers: We got the players together before the penalty shootout. The shooters weren’t determined, we asked who felt good. Quite a few people signed up. Oliver Glasner then said to the shooters that they should do it with full conviction. The fact that the players converted the penalties so convincingly is worthy of all credit. The tension in the penalty shootout was huge. You know that you can win a European Cup title. Before Rafael Borré’s fifth penalty, I felt like it would take forever for him to get to the penalty spot. I was just hoping he would smack the ball in somehow. Afterwards there was pure jubilation, so much of the burden fell off our shoulders. In the emotion you run around wildly and completely uncontrolled.
the beautiful place on earth: At my place.
the Champions League round of 16 against Napoli: Everything is possible. If we do things well, we can cause problems for any team in Europe. Napoli are a really good side who had a very strong run in the autumn. I expect a high-intensity duel, also in terms of the volume of the fan camps.
Goals with Eintracht Frankfurt: We want to develop the team step by step. When that happens, the corresponding results come. You never know what’s going to happen in football. If I had said a year ago that we would win the Europa League, I would have been laughed at.
the cooperation with Glasner: Our cooperation is very, very good. We’ve known each other forever, now for more than 35 years. He is obsessed with success, he drives others, has a clear plan in his head and then sets the direction. It can happen from time to time that there is one or the other argument. But that’s also good, because something like that is also part of the emotion.
formative Trainer: Of course, the long time under Klaus Roitinger, under whom we were promoted to both the second division and the Bundesliga with SV Ried, was particularly formative. Heinz Hochhauser certainly influenced me as well.
the appeal of the head coaching position: At the moment I have no desire for it at all. Being able to work in a great environment in the German Bundesliga is great fun.
