Union Berlin has agreed a contract extension with captain Christopher Trimmel. The club officially announced this on Sunday.

“Christopher has known the club for many years and is an absolute identification figure for players and fans. His sporting achievements speak for themselves and we are happy to have found a good basis for his further Union future with him,” explained managing director Oliver Ruhnert .
Union did not provide information on the exact contract period.

Trimmel switched from Rapid Wien to Union in 2014 and has played 286 competitive games for the Irons so far. The 35-year-old has worn the captain’s armband since 2018. Despite his advanced age, the right-back is still a regular. In the current season he started ten Bundesliga games and was substituted on three times.

“When I came to Berlin more than eight years ago, the clear goal was to eventually get promoted to the Bundesliga with Union and I was convinced that I would experience something big with Union. The last few years have been incredibly emotional and for the club, but also formative for me personally. I am very happy that I can continue to experience and help shape everything,” Trimmel commented on his extension.
