Biathlon: Tarjei Bö: Norway could fill top ten alone

The Norwegian biathletes dominate in the World Cup year at will. A top athlete also recognizes “a luxury problem”.

The Norwegian Olympic champion Tarjei Bö currently sees an almost inexhaustible selection of outstanding biathletes in his home country.

“It’s an absolute luxury problem. We have ten people who can take part in the World Cup today and would make it into the top ten, some could always win,” said Bö of the German Press Agency before the World Cup in Ruhpolding. “We’ve had this ‘problem’ in Norway for a long time in cross-country skiing – and now it’s the same in biathlon.” A maximum of six skiers from one nation are usually allowed per race in biathlon.

Bö’s younger brother Johannes Thingnes Bö is the measure of all things with seven wins in ten races this season, five of the top seven in the overall World Cup are Norwegians. Several double and triple successes make the Scandinavians the big favorites for the World Championships in Oberhof in February. “It’s looking very good for us at the moment. We’re very strong across the board, and if one fails, the next one will be there right away,” said Bö: “It may look easy from the outside, but it can also change quickly rotate.”

In the second-rate IBU Cup, too, the Norwegians determine events as they please and put pressure on the established ski hunters. “The culture in Norway is very good for biathlon right now,” said the eleven-time world champion Bö before the individual in Ruhpolding, Bavaria, on Wednesday (2:10 p.m. / ARD and Eurosport): “The level is incredibly high. Whoever comes to us now and If you want to have a chance, you have to be incredibly good, otherwise you won’t make it. Everyone knows that you have to sacrifice a lot – and in the end we have a lot of good athletes.”
