Sports history is being written in Upper Bavaria: For the first time in almost 90 years, the Maccabi Winter Games, something like the Jewish Winter Olympic Games, are taking place in Ruhpolding. Athletes from 19 nations compete, pray and celebrate together.

Where the Holocaust survivor was speaking, karaoke is now being sung. With fluctuating textual security, but a lot of commitment, two athletes try their hand at the French oldie “Paroles, paroles”. Then the music changes, young athletes storm the dance floor, chanting. “Everybody rock your body right. Backstreet’s back, alright!”
This sharp contrast, from the moment of greatest pain to exuberant joy, shows that when the Maccabi Winter Games take place here in Ruhpolding, Upper Bavaria, for the first time in almost ninety years, a Jewish sporting event is being revived – and it’s about much more than just sport.
