The German national handball team travels to the World Cup without Lukas Zerbe and Tim Zechel.
National coach Alfred Gislason dropped the right winger from TBV Lemgo Lippe and the pivot from HC Erlangen after the last practice session in the training camp in Barsinghausen from the squad for the finals in Poland and Sweden, which for the DHB selection on Friday in Kattowitz with the preliminary round duel against the Asian champions Qatar begins.
“We decided to only fly to the World Cup with 16 men, also because it’s not that far away,” Gislason said, explaining the decision not to use Zerbe and Zechel. Like all other players from the 35-strong provisional World Cup squad, both should “keep in shape with their teams,” said DHB sports director Axel Kromer.
Up to five substitutions with players from the 35 squad are possible during the tournament. In addition to Qatar, Serbia and Algeria in Group E are the other opponents of the German team.
