For biathlete Anna Weidel, the longest race is on the program at her first home World Cup in Ruhpolding. “It’s definitely not my favorite discipline now,” said Weidel about the 15-kilometer individual competition on Thursday (2:10 p.m. / ARD and Eurosport). “It’s always a brutally tough race, you just have to fight your way through it.”
In the only individual of the season so far in Kontiolahti, Finland, the 26-year-old placed 26th with two penalties in the standing position. It should be better in front of her home crowd. “I’ll definitely try to hit all the targets. You can really improve things by shooting,” said Weidel, who is satisfied with how the season has gone so far. “I’ve never had such good and consistent races. But there’s definitely still room for improvement.”
The biathlete celebrated her best result of the season with fifth place in the sprint in Kontiolahti. With a view to the highlight of the season, the World Championships in Oberhof (February 8th to 19th), Weidel is hoping for an upswing: “I’ve never really had the feeling that I’m really at the limit and that I feel extremely good on the route. I hope that will still happen at the World Cup.”
A deployment in Oberhof would be her first start at the World Cup for the native Austrian. In addition to the goal of “getting as many bets as possible”, Weidel also has a special race in mind: “I’m speculating a bit on the single-mixed relay, that’s the race I really want to run in,” said the Beijing Olympic reserve runner.
