Bierhoff successor ?: “Kicker”: Völler has time to think about the DFB job

Who will be Bierhoff’s successor at the DFB? One candidate sits on the expert council himself and should now be given time to think about it.

According to “Kicker” information, ex-world champion Rudi Völler, who was traded as the successor to the resigned national team director Oliver Bierhoff, currently has time to think about it.

Accordingly, the decision-makers around DFB President Bernd Neuendorf are said to have identified the 62-year-old as the ideal person for the period up to and including the EM 2024 in their own country. Völler is currently a member of the expert council of the German Football Association, which is supposed to work through the preliminary round of the national team at the World Cup in Qatar. In the summer he ended his commitment as sports director at Bayer Leverkusen and would therefore be available for the DFB on a free transfer. Manager Fredi Bobic from Hertha BSC is also being traded, but would not be able to get away from the Berliners without a transfer fee.

“Basically, my life planning looks different,” Völler recently told the “Bild” newspaper about the speculation about his person. For the former world-class striker it would be the return to the DFB after more than 18 years. From 2000 to 2004, Völler was responsible for the national team as team boss, which he surprisingly led to the 2002 World Cup final.

Borussia Dortmund’s managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, who is also the head of the supervisory board of the German Football League and also a member of the DFB expert council, described the considerations about Völler as “highly speculative” on Wednesday evening. In the pay-TV channel Sky, Watzke also emphasized that he had “a very, very good opinion” of Völler and had “got along brilliantly with him for many years”.
