The women’s descent, which was canceled in St. Anton, will probably move to Cortina d’Ampezzo, but the second Super-G on the “Karl Schranz” route will replace one originally planned for Italy. A confirmation by the world association (FIS) was still pending.
“It’s very turbulent at the moment, not just because of the race postponements. But that’s part of our job, it’s often been like this, this year it might be extreme. But there have been years like that, we can deal with it,” said ÖSV -Women’s racing director Thomas Trinker. The possible cancellation of the downhill training in St. Anton on Friday had already been prepared the day before, so they switched to training in Lech/Zürs.
The women’s season began with the cancellation of the giant slalom in Sölden due to sleet and poor visibility, which was added to Semmering. The two Matterhorn descents in Zermatt/Cervinia (SUI/ITA) and the parallel race in Lech/Zürs were subsequently canceled without replacement in November due to a lack of snow. Because of the warm weather, the slope conditions in Zagreb did not allow for a second slalom.
Focus is on the World Cup
Even before the St. Anton weekend, the program for the end of January was changed in several places due to the weather forecast. Kronplatz in South Tyrol took over a giant slalom from Spindleruv Mlyn and now has two in the program on January 24th and 25th. For this, the ski area in the Czech Republic will hold the second Zagreb slalom.
Of course, changes in the program also require further adaptations in the preparation. “You have to adapt to that. It’s the break days, which are then shifted a bit every now and then. And that you also adjust the stress on the girls properly.”
After the speed week in Cortina d’Ampezzo, we regenerate and train in view of the world championships in Courchevel/Meribel. “It’s certainly important that you come fresh to a World Cup. But it’s also necessary that you train well. And the next few weeks will show what’s necessary,” said Trinker. He assumes that good results will be achieved. “And then we look forward to the World Cup.”
