Formula 1: Mercedes expects a lot from reserve driver Schumacher

Mick Schumacher is now a reserve driver at Mercedes. The racing team sees a lot of potential in the 23-year-old.

Mercedes sees an important asset for the team in its new Formula 1 reserve driver Mick Schumacher.

The son of record world champion Michael Schumacher will “contribute a lot” because he knows the new generation of cars and the new tires, said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff at a digital media round. With his two years of experience as a regular driver for the US team Haas, the 23-year-old will also be “super helpful” in the simulator. “Mick will be an asset.”

Wolff trusts Schumacher to get back to a regular cockpit by working at Mercedes. “The most important factor is his personality. He is a well-educated, intelligent and talented young man,” the Austrian praised the new pilot, who had to vacate his cockpit at Haas for Nico Hülkenberg (35). “I believe that if you can give him a safe environment to develop further, then he can be a good racing driver with a regular cockpit in the future.”

Wolff named the Dutchman Nyck de Vries, who was a reserve driver at Mercedes and got a permanent cockpit at Alpha Tauri this season, as a role model. Regular drivers for the Silver Arrows are Lewis Hamilton and George Russell from England. The first Grand Prix of the year will take place in Bahrain on March 5th.
