The Italian Brignone, overall World Cup winner of the 2019/20 season, won the shortened race on Saturday with a lead of 0.54 seconds over the Swiss Joana Hählen. Her compatriot Lara Gut-Behrami (+0.66) completed the podium. Best Austrian was Tamara Tippler (+0.89) in fifth place. For the Styrian it was by far the best result of the season.
Cornelia Hütter (+1.07) and Mirjam Puchner (+1.32) made minor mistakes on a treacherous course. After 38 starters, Hütter was in ninth place, Puchner was eleventh. Stephanie Venier (+1.72), Nicole Schmidhofer (+1.78), Ramona Siebenhofer (+2.03), Nadine Fest (+2.60) and Christina Ager (+2.89) were further behind.
Nina Ortlieb passed a gate. Sofia Goggia also had a failure: the Italian lost control of her skis and fell, but immediately gave the all-clear. The race began for the runners at the Super-G reserve start, as there was still too much snow on the slope further up.
“You have to accept the result. Of course, a podium would have been nice, that was also a goal. I knew I was in better shape, we trained well. I was able to gain a lot of self-confidence in training,” said Tippler in a first reaction. In her previous appearances this season, she hadn’t gotten better than 13th place in the second St. Moritz downhill. “Therefore a step in the right direction. Tomorrow is the next chance.”
Hütter had difficulties with start number one. “I didn’t thread myself in at the top, then you’re a bit behind,” explained the Styrian. “Super-G is difficult and we all know that the finish slope is difficult. Not a flawless run, but it was an okay performance, I think.” Puchner said: “It was okay upstairs, not downstairs. We have to do better tomorrow.” On Sunday there will be another Super-G on the “Karl Schranz” slope.
