Tournament in India: stirring dream goal in the World Cup opening victory of the German hockey men

With a sovereign 3-0 win against Japan, the German men’s hockey team got off to a perfect start in the World Cup. World champion Belgium is now waiting.

With a satisfied smile, Christopher Rühr accepted the “Player of the Match” award.

“I couldn’t wish for anything better than playing here at the World Cup in India in front of the enthusiastic fans and winning the first game,” said the German hockey men’s scorer after the safe 3-0 win against Japan at the start of the season title fights.

The 29-year-old played a big part in that with his dream goal to make it 2-0, when he flicked the ball into the goal from a tight angle after a remarkable pass from Hannes Müller. “It was an intuitive reaction after a perfect pass,” said Rühr after his 68th goal for the national team.

However, it took until the 35th minute before captain Mats Grambusch brought the DHB selection 1-0 ahead after the fifth penalty corner. “Then the knot burst,” said Thies Ole Prinz, who scored the 3-0 and thus scored his first international goal. “We can be very satisfied with this start,” said the 24-year-old.

National coach Henning: “Almost nothing allowed”

National coach André Henning also liked the first game. “In the beginning it was the typical start to a tournament, a bit nervous and little connection. We were able to rely on a stable defense today and allowed almost nothing,” said the coach. “Today there were easily six or seven goals,” said Henning.

In the next game on Tuesday (2.30 p.m. / DAZN) against defending champion Belgium, the DHB selection is about going directly into the quarter-finals. The world champion also won his first game comfortably 5-0 against South Korea.
