live commentary

We will report live from the Villach Stadthalle from 6.15 p.m.

The Steinbach Black Wings are at stake today in the away game in Villach in a direct duel for fourth place in the table. Before the traditional duel – it is the 171st game at the highest Austrian level, no other pairing has been played more often since the league was merged in summer 2000 – the Linzers are one point behind the Carinthians.

As in the first meeting in Villach, Steyr’s Niklas Wetzl, son of ex-Black Wings President Wilfrid Wetzl, will defend the eagles today (7.15 p.m., in the live ticker on nachrichten.at). “When I was a little boy, I used to watch every Black Wings game. And then playing against them is a very special feeling,” said the 21-year-old in an OÖN interview after the away game in Villach in mid-November. Read the entire interview here:

Jesenice applies for admission

Yesterday the win2day ICE Hockey League received the nominations for all 13 teams for the coming season. Acroni Jesenice has also submitted an application for membership. This is now being examined and then submitted to the clubs for approval. The Slovenians, who played in the domestic league between 2006 and 2012, currently top the table in the second-tier league, the Alps Hockey League.

“That was one of the main reasons for going to Linz”

The current episode of the icebreaker podcast is about someone who knows both sides – i.e. Villach and Linz. Julian Pusnik was born in Villach, learned to play ice hockey in Innsbruck, went through the youth department of VSV and has been playing for the Black Wings for four years. He is also the son of KAC and VSV legend Andreas Pusnik and grandson of the only Austrian in the hockey hall of fame to date, Sepp Puschnig. In episode 33 he tells us why he chose Linz, how he got number 80 and what would have become of him if ice hockey didn’t exist:

In the latest entry on his comeback blog, blogger Gerd Kragl mentions a former VSV player who could soon go missing in the imaginary hospital. PS: Julian Pusnik chose this player in his starting six:
