All uncovered courts at Melbourne Park suspended tennis play and training around 2pm local time (4am BST) after reaching level 5 on the so-called ‘heat stress scale’. Game operations continued in the three covered stadiums Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and John Cain Arena.
Among the interrupted games was the match between Julia Grabher from Vorarlberg and Estonian Anett Kontaveit, number 16. The game did not continue after ten minutes and was interrupted for around three hours when the score was 1-1 due to the heat. Ultimately, Grabher lost her debut tennis grand slam. The 26-year-old lost 4: 6.3: 6. Since Dominic Thiem was also eliminated before that, Austria is no longer represented in the individual competitions.
Four climate factors are included in the calculation of the “heat stress scale”: air temperature, radiant heat, humidity and wind speed. These values are measured in real time at five locations throughout the facility. The scale ranges from 1 (moderate game conditions) to 5 (game disruption).
