Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria was also hit on Wednesday. The 35-year-old was beaten by the Italian qualifier Lucrezia Stefanini 6: 3, 5: 7 and 4: 6. For the world number 71. it was the fifth first-round loss in a row in Melbourne.
The matches of Siegemund and Maria were actually scheduled for Tuesday, but had to be postponed by one day due to rain. For the same reason, the start of the games on Wednesday was postponed by several hours into the evening (local time).
“It was extremely difficult with the conditions. We waited almost two days for the match, then warmed up what felt like 15 times, with drizzle in between,” said Siegemund afterwards at Eurosport: “You have to be prepared for a roller coaster.” She was “really happy” to have won the match. “In the cold conditions, it wasn’t easy physically either.”
