Tuesday evening, Villach Stadthalle, 53rd minute. At a score of 3:4 from the Black Wings’ point of view, striker Andreas Kristler enters the offensive zone to launch another attack. When he is confronted by Villach defender Philipp Lindner, he retaliates with an attempted stick check, which, after a turn, is set much too high – at the opponent’s head height. Kristler – born in East Tyrol and raised near Villach – is sent under the shower by the referees after a short video study with a game time penalty.
While in real time it appeared as if Lindner had dealt a first cross check on Kristler, league video footage (see below) shows Kristler being separated from the disc by Lindner “with a legal defensive play”. The stick check against the head, which the league evaluates as a “stick hit or high stick”, is correctly sanctioned – with a two-game ban and a fine of 500 euros for the Linz attacker. Kristler will therefore miss the Black Wings away games against Feldkirch and Innsbruck.

4:5 – Linz had to admit defeat to Villach in extra time
“It was very stupid of me but I had absolutely no intention of hurting him. I just want to apologize to Lindi, to my team and to everyone who saw it. I’m glad I didn’t hurt him.” , said Kristler after the game. The Black Wings survived the 5-minute manpower situation and scored 61 seconds before the end through Graham Knott to equalize 4:4. After good chances and a lot of pressure in extra time, Villach scored the decisive goal to make it 5:4 with the first shot on goal in overtime. “I’m still very proud of the boys that they survived the five minutes and even equalized. That shows how much character there is in this squad,” says Kristler.
