A sold-out house, party atmosphere, ecstasy: the 83rd Hahnenkamm races serve up the expected folk festival when it snows. The conditions for the speed aces on the most spectacular descent in the world left a lot to be desired. “The Streif is always dangerous, today you drive into a white wall,” said Romed Baumann, describing the scenario.
The route was once faster to drive. “Stielhang-Ausfahrt, Gschöss, Seidlalm – there’s fresh snow inside, of course, so it’s stagnant.” Vincent Kriechmayr, who had won the first descent on Friday, felt this in particular. With start number seven, the 31-year-old from Gramastetten caught a real skid mark after the American Jared Goldberg (No. 5) had a minor crash.
“It can’t have been that alone”
But the interruption was disastrous for Kriechmayr, which meant he had no chance of a possible podium finish.
“I didn’t quite get the U-Hakerl, the break before my ride wasn’t exactly ideal because it was snowing. We had a hard time with the track, that’s also part of an outdoor sport. It can’t have been that alone,” explained Kriechmayr, who tipped his hat to Aleksander Aamodt Kilde.
The Norwegian drove excellently the day after his hara-kiri ride with a near fall and won ahead of Frenchman Johan Clarey and Travis Ganong of the USA. “He was tremendous,” said the Mühlviertler.
“These are the best athletes in the world”
Arnold Schwarzenegger, the star guest at the Weißwurst party at the Stanglwirt in Going on Friday, honored the Streif with his entourage. “It’s a very exciting ski race when it’s snowing, and it’s also very dangerous. But these are the best athletes in the world,” emphasized the Hollywood star.
“I love Austria, the hospitality here, the beautiful hotels. My daughter, Christina, is very happy here. The Heather, my girlfriend, too. I want to show them how beautiful this country is.”
