World Cup in Antholz: Denise Herrmann-Wick wins biathlon pursuit

Second World Cup victory of the season for biathlete Denise Herrmann-Wick. In Antholz she didn’t give the competition a chance.

Biathlete Denise Herrmann-Wick celebrated her tenth World Cup victory at the World Cup in Antholz and, two and a half weeks before the home World Championships in Oberhof, sent a warning towards the competition.

In the pursuit race, the 34-year-old delivered a courageous performance and prevailed in front of the Italian Lisa Vittozzi and the Swede Elvira Öberg. In her second win of the season, Herrmann-Wick only had to go into the penalty loop twice on the demanding course and thanks to her top form in skiing she stayed ahead of her pursuers on the last loop.

“It’s always so cool to run here,” Herrmann-Wick said on ZDF after her success. “It was really great.”

In the end, the individual Olympic champion, who ensured the second win of the season for the German women’s team, had an eleven-second lead over the flawless Vittozzi and 17.2 seconds over Öberg. The Saxon had previously won the sprint in Hochfilzen and finished third in the sprint in Le Grand-Bornand.

Season debutant Hanna Kebinger was tenth and thus managed half the World Championship standard. Janina Hettich-Walz confirmed her improving form in twelfth place.
