The number one in the tennis world is no longer in the tournament at the Australian Open. A young hopeful from the USA has also dropped out.
World number one Iga Swiatek missed the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in Melbourne. The Polish tennis player lost her round of 16 duel against Wimbledon winner Jelena Rybakina from Kazakhstan 4: 6, 4: 6.
In the three previous rounds, Swiatek (21) hadn’t dropped a single set and defeated Dortmund’s Jule Niemeier at the start.
Born in Russia, Rybakina was the first player to reach the quarterfinals of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. The 23-year-old had never gotten that far at the hard court tournament in Melbourne Park. In the round of the top eight players, Rybakina meets Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, who defeated young US star Coco Gauff 7:5, 6:3.
