Despite a penalty by Roman Rees, the German biathletes have gained self-confidence for the home World Championships in Oberhof with their fourth podium finish in the fourth relay race of the winter.
At the end of the World Cup in Antholz, Italy, David Zobel, Johannes Kühn, Benedikt Doll and final runner Rees were only beaten by winners Norway and France.
At the dress rehearsal for the title fights from February 8th to 19th in Thuringia, the quartet of the German Ski Association made one penalty loop and eleven spare rounds and finished 4×7.5 kilometers 2:17.5 minutes behind Olympic champion Norway. The team performed solidly until the last of eight shooting stages, but then Rees went to the penalty loop. Shortly before the end, however, the gaps were so large that Sweden, in fourth place, could no longer come close.
Previously, the German women had also secured third place in France’s victory, even without top runner Denise Herrmann-Wick. The newly formed quartet with Vanessa Voigt, Sophia Schneider, Janina Hettich-Walz and Hanna Kebinger needed a total of ten extra cartridges. One day after her victory in the pursuit, Herrmann-Wick did not compete. The 34-year-old subordinates everything to the World Championships in Oberhof. The season highlight begins on February 8th with the mixed relay.
