The weather cooperated, the first champions at the Paraski World Championships in Espot, Spain, have been crowned. For Austria, the title fights have started very successfully with gold and silver. Markus Salcher successfully defended his title from the previous year in the standing men.
The 31-year-old from Carinthia secured his seventh gold medal. He left the Swiss Robin Cuche behind by two tenths of a second. French favorite Arthur Bauchet was third.
“I was a bit nervous before the race because we haven’t been able to drive for a few days now. A title defense is always something special. That shows that I drive at a consistently high level and that I have strong nerves. Of course, my routine helps me with that,” said a happy Salcher.
The decision for the visually impaired men mutated into a hundredth thriller. Johannes Aigner with guide Matteo Fleischmann was beaten by Neil Simpson by just 0.02 seconds. Michael Scharnagl with guide Florian Erharter finished fifth on his comeback.
“The gap was extremely close, but I’m still happy about silver,” said Aigner: “The run was good, there’s definitely still something possible in the next races. We are ready in any case.”
The alpine combination is scheduled for tomorrow in Espot. Carina Edlinger will be fighting for medals in the cross-country sprint tomorrow at the Nordic title fights in Östersund.
