Coach (40) died during training: Lobnig rival resigns

Austria’s top rower Magdalena Lobnig lost one of her toughest competitors: Jeannine Gmelin announced her immediate retirement from rowing on Wednesday.

Originally, the 32-year-old Swiss woman only wanted to stop after the 2024 games in Paris, but a stroke of fate threw her plans upside down.

On December 16, her trainer Robin Dowell (40) died unexpectedly during a training session on Lake Sarnsee, which he accompanied by motorboat. With him, Gmelin not only lost a coach. As the former world champion explained, Dowell was also “a friend, a great person, my soulmate and the reason I became the athlete I am.”

The two have been working together since 2017 and he led them to world championship gold in the first year, the greatest success in Swiss rowing history. In order to be able to continue working with him, Gmelin even broke away from the Swiss association and set up his own team.
