“The club is a school of life”

“The club is a school of life”

“I’m really happy with it. Now it’s not only a dream team, but also a green team.” Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler praised the commitment of the Steinbach Black Wings, who have been the sustainability pioneers of the ice hockey league with the “Green Events Partner” certificate since the beginning of the season. Whether the people of Linz have a dream team will only become clear in weeks and months, but as they are currently fifth, they are definitely on a promising path – and equipped with champion ambitions in six categories, if it were up to the charter they signed, which is in Cooperation with the ecological institute “pulswerk” based on six principles of sustainability.

In ongoing game operations, everything revolves around the here and now, defeats or injury problems have to be checked off quickly, there is no room for spreadsheets or request concerts – for the next ice hockey generation, very much so.

“We have a huge responsibility towards our offspring, the fans, the whole city,” emphasized Anna-Sophie Müller, Black Wings’ Marketing Manager. That’s how club president Peter Nader sees it: “The club is a school of life,” he says. “With us, children start learning to become a team at the age of four to five. We see it as our duty to help them become great and responsible people. Ideally, we accompany talented youngsters through to professional careers and in the In the best case, even to a career after their playing days – as you can see from our coaching team.” Philipp Lukas, for example, wore the Black Wings jersey from 2000 to 2018 (eleven seasons as captain), now the 43-year-old is head coach.

“Like family to me”

Defender Gerd Kragl (25) – currently out of action with a cruciate ligament tear – is well on the way to emulating the Viennese. The national player is predestined to slip into the club’s role of “Green Events Ambassador”. Because as a local hero, he knows exactly what the “youngsters” need. The assistant captain was born in Linz, “tore up” his first skates at the EHC at the age of eight and made the leap into the professional squad at the age of 16. “There is no other club that I hold in my heart like the Black Wings. They are like family to me,” says Kragl: “We want to serve as a good role model for Upper Austria.” And in various categories.

This starts with carpooling, continues with waste separation and waste minimization and extends to eating regional products. This pulling together is also honored by the fans. On Sunday (5:30 p.m.) in the home game against Pustertal’s “Wölfe” about 3000 should take a seat in the Linz-AG-Eisarena – without forgetting their green thumbs.

Charter of the Black Wings

In their charter, Black Wings Linz commit to implementing six principles of sustainability in all areas of club life:

  • Masters of environmentally friendly mobility: Arrive on foot, by bike, by public transport and in car pools
  • Masters of sustainable catering: catering according to the standards of the Austrian eco-label; Preference for regional, seasonal, organic products
  • Master of waste prevention and waste separation
  • Masters of resource conservation: purchase of ecological paper and cleaning agents; Attempt to switch to green electricity
  • Champion of inclusion: accessibility, special offers (free tickets for children), commitment to fair play
  • Masters of active communication: The youngsters should come into contact with the principles of sustainability from an early age.

More sustainability

The Feronia sustainability prize will be awarded for the first time this year. Together with the state of Upper Austria, OÖN and Oberbank are looking for the best concepts, products, services and initiatives on the subject in the areas of business, culture and social affairs.
