The Kazakh Elena Rybakina and the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka will settle the Australian Open title, the first Grand Slam of the season. Rybakina, 23, twenty-fifth in the ranking and Wimbledon champion last year, dispatched Victoria Azarenka, also a Belarusian, Melbourne champion in 2012 and 2013, with partials of 7-6 (7/4) and 6-3. On her way to her fourth WTA title, the Kazakh will clash in the final with Sabalenka, fifth in the ranking and just a year older than her next rival. Sabalenka, who beat the Polish Magda Linette 7-6 (7/1) and 6-2, will go for her twelfth consecration on the circuit and for her first crown in a Grand Slam individual tournament, since in doubles she celebrated in Australia in 2021 after having done so at the 2019 US Open, on both occasions in partnership with the Belgian Elise Mertens. The women’s throne in Melbourne was left vacant after Australian Ashley Barthy retired from tennis after becoming world number one champion a year ago. Meanwhile in the men’s branch, the last four tennis players will seek their place today in the grand final on Sunday in Melbourne.
