Salzburg defeated Slovak leaders Slovan Bratislava 1-0 in Taxham in 120 minutes and thus survived their fourth friendly in January without a defeat. Offensive star Noah Okafor scored the only goal via the bottom edge of the bar (54th). Sekou Koita missed a penalty a little later (65′).
Slovan captain Vladimir Weiss caused a stir in what was basically a tough duel. The coach’s son saw the red card for an assault in the 95th minute, and the match only continued after some discussions on the pitch. The first Israeli top talent Oscar Gloukh (18) brought in this week was on the pitch for Salzburg for the first time in the final 30 minutes. Striker Fernando also made a comeback after four months out with a hamstring injury.
“It was a good performance in terms of play,” praised Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle. “There was a lot there that we also want to see in the competitive games. So the conclusion is very positive.” A 4-4 win against Bayern Munich in the friendly two weeks ago was followed by Salzburg’s pre-season wins against Sparta Prague (2-1), Karlsruher SC (3-0) and Bratislava. The first competitive game of the new year is on the program for the Bulls on Friday (8.45 p.m./live ORF 1) with the cup quarter-final hit against Sturm Graz.
