As is well known, Thiago moved from FC Barcelona to FC Bayern Munich in 2013. Manchester United was also a serious option at the time.
As you know, Spain’s international Thiago Alcantara moved to FC Bayern in 2013. But shortly before that, he is said to have been very interested in a move to Manchester United.
In his last days in the service of FC Barcelona, the then 22-year-old was about to move to FC Bayern. At the time, Thiago was the preferred player for Pep Guardiola, who had just recently signed on with FCB and when asked at a press conference which transfers he would like, said: “Thiago or nothing.”
But Thiago was apparently not completely convinced of the Munich team at first, as the former England international and today’s TV expert Rio Ferdinand now revealed in his YouTube show “Vibe with FIVE”.
FC Bayern: “Before Thiago left Barcelona, he called me”
Ferdinand said: “Before Thiago left Barcelona he called me.” Ferdinand continued: “I didn’t know Thiago, but David De Gea gave him my number.”
“He called me and said, ‘I would like to come to ManUnited. Is there anyone I can talk to or you can talk to just to show interest?'” Reported Ferdinand.
According to Ferdinand, he spoke to then coach David Moyes and CEO Ed Woodward. However, the management declined because other new signings had already been “close to completion”.
Bayern: ultimatum before Thiago change?
Thiago called again shortly afterwards: “I slept about it one night, can you tell me something about ManUnited, what’s going on there?” Thiago is said to have said.
Thiago also mentioned an ultimatum from Bayern: “I have 24 hours to make a decision, otherwise Pep won’t bring me to Bayern Munich.”
Ferdinand concluded: “He went to Bayern Munich and the rest is history. But what a guy! A great guy!”
As is well known, Thiago then moved to Munich for a transfer fee of 25 million euros and won the championship every year for seven years and said goodbye to Liverpool FC as a triple winner in 2020.
