The World Tour racing team Astana, which with Alexander Vinokurow himself has had a controversial team boss and former doping offender for years, parted ways in December with the Colombian climbing specialist, who was involved in doping investigations. The racing team had received new evidence that Lopez was connected to controversial doctor Marcos Maynar.
The Spaniard was arrested on May 11 for drug trafficking and money laundering and had denied the allegations at the time. He is accused of dealing in doping substances. Professional cyclist Lopez was suspended in July after being questioned and searched by police at Madrid airport. He then walked free again.
Lopez now drives for the lower-class team Medellin – EPM. And set a full exclamation mark at the heavily occupied Vuelta a San Juan Internacional, in which, among others, Vuelta winner Remco Evenepoel also drove. He won the tour and also the king’s stage with strong performances. Lopez is considered a climbing specialist and a good tour driver. In 2018 he finished third overall in the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta, and two years ago he finished sixth in the Tour de France.
