The new national ice hockey coach Harold Kreis has signed a contract with the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) for three years, but will only take up his future post after the end of the season with the Schwenninger Wild Wings.
The DEB announced this at the presentation of Toni Söderholm’s successor in Munich. The contract runs until the upcoming Winter Games and the following World Cup in 2026.
Kreis’s assistant coach will be former NHL defenseman Alexander Sulzer. The 38-year-old former international also signed for three years. Sulzer should form a permanent team of coaches with a circle, but at the same time remain an assistant coach at the DEL Club in Bremerhaven.
“With Harold Kreis and Alexander Sulzer, we have managed to get a coaching team for the DEB. Both of them have the potential to lead our very well-positioned men’s national team to the top eight nations in the world on a permanent basis,” said DEB- President Peter Merten.
With the DEL-Club from Schwenningen, the 64-year-old German-Canadian district is currently just above the playoff line in ninth place. It could be problematic if the Wild Wings manage a big surprise and the playoff participation overlaps with the start of the World Cup preparations on April 4th. The World Cup in Finland and Latvia as the first major test will be held from May 12th to 28th.
