The Austrian Ski Association has nominated its squad for the World Championships in Courchevel and Meribel (from February 6th). Despite manageable results in the women’s technical disciplines, the principle of equality applies. Twelve women and men each were nominated.
Some well-known athletes are conspicuous by their absence. Take Nicole Schmidhofer, for example. The 33-year-old Styrian won Super-G gold in St. Moritz in 2017 and fought back after a serious fall that tore all the ligaments in her left knee.
Michael Matt, team Olympic champion in 2022 in Beijing and double medalist at the 2019 World Championships in Aare, is not there either. The same applies to giant slalom specialist Roland Leitinger, who is not yet the “old man” after a cruciate ligament tear. The 31-year-old from Salzburg was Vice World Champion in St. Moritz in 2017.
“Only” two Upper Austrians in France
Stephanie Brunner, who is also shaken by many knee injuries, also does not have a World Cup shirt. The same applies to three Upper Austrians: Elisa Mörzinger from Altenfelden is missing a top 15 result in this giant slalom season.
Speed hope Elisabeth Reisinger was thrown back by an injury. For “rookie” Andreas Ploier from Straß im Attergau, the World Championships are still too early, although he showed on Saturday in Cortina d’Ampezzo with a 13th place in the Super-G.
Ultimately, two Upper Austrians appear in the 24-man squad: Gramastettner Vincent Kriechmayr was already set as a double title defender (gold in downhill and super-G in Cortina), led by Nußdorfer Daniel Hemetsberger, second from Lake Louise and third from Cortina no way around.
