In the eighth minute, Emil Forsberg converted the 26-year-old’s assist to make it 1-0, and Laimer scored the 2-0 himself (41st minute). “We deservedly advanced a lap,” said the midfielder. “It can carry on like this. We won the thing last year, it was great fun. We wouldn’t mind a repeat.”

ÖFB teammate Xaver Schlager played for the Saxons in front of 34,822 spectators until the 79th minute, Christoph Baumgartner was substituted at Hoffenheim in the 57th minute. After Kasper Dolberg’s goal (77′), Leipzig striker Timo Werner finally decided the knockout duel. Shortly before the end, Hoffenheim’s Stanley Nsoki saw yellow/red (86th).

No fan chants due to a medical emergency

The Leipzig team has been unbeaten in 17 games. The mood during the round of 16 was subdued: a fan collapsed before kick-off and had to be resuscitated. The fans stopped singing out of sympathy.
