After the not entirely voluntary resignation of President Gerhard Milletich on Tuesday, the country’s largest sports association is in a serious leadership crisis. It is unlikely that the “princes” will succeed in filling in the deep rifts at tomorrow’s executive committee meeting of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) in Graz. According to the statutes, the vice-presidents Gerhard Götschhofer (Upper Austria), Josef Geisler (T), Johann Gartner (Lower Austria) and Bundesliga supervisory board chairman Philip Thonhauser will take over the management of the ÖFB on an interim basis, although none of the four candidates seriously believe that a muddled cart will be set in motion can be when four men are behind the wheel.
“We should find each other again as soon as possible and talk to each other,” says Götschhofer, who has openly criticized the ÖFB President since the announcement of the Milletich affair, who is said to have not correctly separated his association function from his professional interests as the head of the publishing house was. In this role he was pretty much left alone, although other state presidents had also criticized Milletich’s unfortunate actions. Götschhofer: “I have no problem with being the only one who really opened his mouth, but now it would be important to talk smack.” It is unlikely that you can get together at the ÖFB on Friday in Graz. A successor to Milletich as President is also not in sight. The only thing that seems clear to everyone is that they will need someone from outside who has not been involved in any of the trench warfare so far.
