On February 1, Tom Brady announced his retirement, “for good,” as the 45-year-old explained. Because a year to the day before that, he had ended his career for the first time – only to back out 40 days later and play one last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

If he sticks to his decision this time as expected, he could retire as a New England Patriot: His ex-team, which he led to the Super Bowl triumph six times, offered him a one-day contract. This is common in the US professional leagues when a player retires but has not recently played with the team with which he has spent the longest time or had the greatest success.

“For us he was always a patriot and always will be”

“Not only do I want it, our fans are clamoring for it. He’s always been a patriot to us and always will be,” said Patriots owner Robert Kraft in a TV interview with CNN. “We will do everything in our power to bring him back and honor him for many years to come.” Brady had played for the Boston-based team for 20 years before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the last three years of his career, where he also brought a Super Bowl victory.
