LASK trainer Dietmar Kühbauer used the first public appearance in the new year to make a statement on his own behalf: “It is important to me.” As part of the press conference for the ÖFB Cup quarterfinals on Sunday against Klagenfurt, he read a statement about his sometimes racist abuse in the last test match in Belek against Wisla Krakow (3: 1).
“A lot has been written in the last week, it is rightly a very sensitive topic, so I would like to say something about it. It is important to me to talk about the Kraków game again in this context. It was an idiotic action on my part that has no place on the football pitch or anywhere else.”
“I’m terribly sorry for the insults I uttered to the opposing team. And I mean that with body and soul, and are not justifiable. I want to apologize to everyone I’ve hurt. And I mean that 100 percent. Furthermore, I ask that my mistake not be assigned or blamed on the team or the club. I am 100 percent solely responsible for my words.”
No procedure from the Bundesliga
The LASK already sanctioned the derailment, there is no threat of punishment from the Bundesliga and the ÖFB: Since the test match took place in Belek, only the Turkish association could become active, the Bundesliga announced. That is extremely unlikely.
