Dennis Novak opens Austria’s Davis Cup international match against Croatia against Borna Coric in Rijeka today (2 p.m., live on Laola1). Dominic Thiem then plays against Borna Gojo. But the double could tip the scales.
Austria is not badly positioned for this. Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler have already won the biggest ATP tournaments at home in Kitzbühel in 2021 and in Vienna last year. In the international match, they want to contribute a point against Croatia in the fight for a place in the final round. “We also know now that we can keep up against the big players. We definitely think we have a chance,” says Erler.
The cancellation of the injured Mate Pavic could play into the hands of the ÖTV duo. Erler/Miedler will open Sunday’s program at 1 p.m. against Ivan Dodig and Nikola Mektic. However, Dodig is not a blank slate either. The 38-year-old is eleventh in the world rankings.
